Story of a Band – Kinsfolk

They are young, fun and oh SO stylish. Guys, meet Peter and Dominik, who form Kinsfolk  – a Slovak indie duo based in Denmark. And guess what? I got to hang out with them in Odense the whole afternoon which we spent by taking some shots, as their new single just came out, and chatting about everything –  music, life, and  Denmark. They told me so much interesting stuff that I decided to bring all of that to you – and for the first time in both English and Slovak. Let me know what you think! X

  1. How was Kinsfolk formed and why “Kinsfolk? “

D: Kinsfolk actually started as a side project. As the cousins, we were growing up together and have been playing together since 2008 under several band-names, often with some other people. Our last band was called Parting Mouth and at the time when Kinsfolk was formed it was still active – we released a record, played shows and so on. When the new band was formed, we just wanted to try something different and be just the two of us. So we recorded ”Adelaide” and it felt natural to automatically come up with the new name for the band. We have considered a number of names but we liked ‘Kinsfolk’ the most. We are family after all and this title tells it to people too, you know? But I guess we pretty much thought it sounded cool as a band name as well.

  1. What or who were your childhood influences in terms of music?

D: At the beginning, I remember listening to Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls and not knowing what music really is. But around the age of 10 to 11 I really liked Linkin Park. Oh yeah, that was my sort of thing. Then in 2005 (?), yeah that sounds about right… I fell in love with The Killers and I have to say I am a very loyal partner in my relationship with this band until now. Also, I was a ballroom dancer when I was a little boy and I believe this taught me the rhythm and all that. It definitely influenced in terms of wanting to be a drummer and a musician.

P: I don’t remember the music from my early childhood, but my parents told me that when I was little and I heard Bryan Adams playing on TV I immediately went crazy. Later on I was really into Linkin Park. But after that when I turned 14 or 15, I went back to the same path from my early childhood and I started discovering the bands like The Killers and Death Cab for Cutie.

Čo alebo kto vás v detstve najviac hudobne ovplyvnil?

D: Zo začiatku som zvykol počúvať Backstreet Boys a Spice Girls, no v tom čase som hudbe ešte nejako hlbšie nerozumel. Keď som mal asi 10 rokov, páčil sa mi Linkin Park. Áno, to bolo moje! Neskôr som sa zamiloval do The Killers.

V 15-tich rokoch som začal objavovať kapely ako The Killers či Death Cab for Cutie.

  1. What were your influences in creating your music and sound?

D: I’d say there is a lot of old-fashioned guitar-based songwriting behind our music. However, we naturally try to bring some new, what is for us yet-undiscovered stuff, into that. But I really admire just a simple, yet touching, story-telling so we try to stick to that.  Who knows if we’ll manage to do it, but I believe there is some potential in us.

P: Definitely other musicians, mostly older songwriters. Also, life itself influenced us in some ways, I guess.

  1. How does the creative process of Kinsfolk look like? How would you describe your music?

D: Most of our songs start with this ‘bonfire’ atmosphere. Some guitar and a lot of humming, and lately a piano with all that. Every now and then we sit together and show ourselves the content of our personal idea-library. I mean, the demos, the lyrics, the short records on our phones – everything. We discuss that and try to find out what we like the most. And on the other side, sometimes we just play and see what’s gonna happen.

P: Yeah, I agree. It differs from song to song and it’s hard to generalize the process.

Sem – tam si spolu s Peťom sadneme a diskutujeme o našich nápadoch.

  1. What music and artists are you addicted to at the moment?

P: I currently listen to Bryan Adams, Bruce Springsteen from the “older” ones. And from the “newer” artists, I would say James Bay, MØ, Hurts or Passenger.

D: When I listen to something these days, it is either the new M83 album ‘Junk’, the album ‘Centerfold’ by the Brooklyn-based band Mothxr or some of the ‘80s classics like Journey. And yeah well, Springsteen. There is never enough of Springsteen.

Ktorých hudobníkov teraz najviac počúvate?

P: Z tých “old schoolových” najviac Bryana Adamsa a Bruce Springsteena. Z tých “novších” počúvam Jamesa Baya, MØ, Hurts a Passangera.

D: Ak tieto dni niečo počúvam, je to zväčša nový M83 album “Junk,” album “Centerfold” od Brooklynskej kapely Mothxr, prípadne nejakú klasiku 80-tych rokov, ako napr. Journey. A Sprinsteena! Jeho hudby nikdy nemám dosť.

  1. How did your life in Denmark, or eventually, Danish music scene influence you and your music?

P: Anywhere you go, everything you experience it will affect you in some way. I think it was the same case with Denmark. Meeting other people from different cultures, getting some different points of view on life, even if the general ones – all this definitely influenced me. I’d say it just gives you another kind of inspiration or perspective.

D: I agree. It was a step forward in life and it surely influenced us somehow. But it’s hard to specify how exactly. I’d say that we as band have become more open-minded.

No, ťažko povedať, v čom konkrétne. Povedal by som, že nám to otvorilo oči a sme viac tolerantní k inému a novému.

  1. Pick three Danish musicians you would definitely recommend Slovaks to listen and vice-versa, three Slovak artists you think Danes should discover?

P: That’s a tough one. To be honest, I don’t listen to many Slovak or Danish musicians. However, from the Danish music scene, I’d probably go with MØ and I’ve also heard Go Go Berlin and Too Many Left Hands are good. From the Slovak ones, I’d go with Lavagance, Noc a deň and Bad Karma Boy.

D: As for the Danish artists, I’m gonna go with the Raveonettes, the White Album and Slaughter Beach, a local band which I have discovered just a few days ago. Oh yes, and MØ. I guess a lot of people know her in Slovakia now, but I can’t help myself, she’s just great! … and yeah that makes it four. I failed (grins). And the Slovaks? I like the artists Peter mentioned. To extend that list, I’d go with Jana Kirschner, Nvmeri and the Ills. There are a lot of good artists in Slovakia, I definitely recommend Danes to check them out.

Vyberte troch dánskych hudobníkov, ktorých by ste odporučili Slovákom vypočuť si a naopak, ktorých slovenských hudobníkov by ste odporučili dánkemu publiku?

P: Ó, to je ťažká otázka. Úprimne, nepočúvam veľmi často dánskych či slovenských hudobníkov. No ale napriek tomu, z dánskej scény najviac počúvam a samozrejme, aj odporúčam MØ, Go Go Berlin a Too Many Left Hands. Zo slovenskej scény ma zaujali Lavagance, Noc a deň a Bad Karma Boy.

D: Z dánskych umelcov by som odporúčal vypočuť si Raveonettes, White Album a Slaughter beach, lokálnu kapelu, ktorú som objavil len pred pár dňami. Áno a MØ. … A zase som vymenoval viac kapiel, než bolo treba . Zo slovenských by som tento list rozšíril o Janu Kirschner, Nvmeri a the Ills. Na Slovensku máme veľa dobrých umelcov a určite odporúčam Dánom, aby im dali šancu.

  1. What is so far the highlight of 2016 for Kinsfolk?

D: We have finally settled as a band. Two years we were living in different towns and even kind of up and down in Slovakia and Denmark. The biggest highlight is that we can finally function properly. There is really something going on, you know? And we are happy about that.

Dva roky sme žili každý v inom meste, pendlovali sme medzi Slovenskom a Dánskom. A máme z toho veľkú radosť!

  1. What are your plans for the future?

P: Well, to keep working on music. Sometimes it’s hard to focus just on that, especially when you need to find the right balance between your daily life and music as so far it is not our full-time job. But yeah, the plan is to keep working on it and hopefully to grow personally, musically, and we’ll see where the future will take us.

D: Talking about the future, right now our minds are busy with the next song we are planning to release by the end of the year. We’re also planning some shows back home in Slovakia, but also in other countries. We’ll give you more info as soon as we have everything ready.

Aké máte plány do budúcnosti?

  1. Can you explain us the story behind your new single Will Wait For You?

P: The story can have different meanings, it depends on what way you look at it, or in what situation you’re currently in. Either you’re a person who’s trying to find your soul mate and wish to have what some couples do, or it could possibly be seen as a relationship triangle. Let me elaborate on that. Well, there are two individuals together but there’s the third one who’s trying to get the attention of one from the couple. A secret lover? Yeah, could be. So he or she would say that no matter what will happen, each would be waiting for this one person. But once again, it’s really up to the audience, what they take from it.

Vysvetlili by ste nám príbeh vášho nového singlu Will Wait For You?
